SERVICES

No shipbuilding after all ...

Despite the Dutch fascination with shipbuilding, it turned out not to be my specialism. In fact, the shipbuilding industry was about to close its doors in the Netherlands when I moved to this country. Therefore, my performances in that field did not go further than the design of heavy crane installations on special vessels, ship deck reinforcements for extraordinary transports, pipelaying barge adaptations and the like. Other structural engineering, like bridge building, large hydraulic and industrial systems received all the more space in my work.

You can view the details of my professional career so far on the next tab pages of this site. This page focuses on the kinds of services that I can offer. Please keep in mind that my firm is a one-man company. Therefore, if your project requires contracting a large design, engineering or construction company then I can help you find one and manage the contract, but I will not execute this project by my own means. The list below shows some examples of services that I can provide.

Forms of services

  • Conceptual solutions to a wide range of ideas, problems etc. in the field of civil, structural and heavy mechanical engineering;

  • Feasibility studies and systematic multi-criteria assessments for such solutions;

  • Global assessments of costs, benefits, environmental impacts etc. of different engineering solutions in construction;

  • Preliminary designs of structures and systems in infrastructure, hydraulic engineering and other disciplines of my expertise (see the following tabs of this website);

  • Development of contract specifications and other requirements for a wide range of construction projects, including investigations, engineering, execution, maintenance and other works;

  • Project planning in time and finances, guiding of (or assistance in) contracting procedures;

  • Review, assessment and rating of design solutions presented by tendering parties;

  • Studies on risk analysis and risk management for projects in infrastructure and heavy industry;

  • Project management, technological, and other specialist assistance in design contests (e.g. for bridges, special buildings, stadiums etc.);

  • Expertising, so-called "second opinions" and independent judgements in construction related controversies between parties;

  • Detailed reviews of final design documents (analyses, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, etc.) prior to approval for construction;

  • Consulting services in (and supervision of) project crucial execution procedures;

  • Technical expertise in structure or device commissioning, putting into operation, setting up maintenance programs and the like;

  • Global condition assessments of structures; contracting and guiding of special investigations if required;

  • Condition assessments of structures and devices (e.g. bridges, navigation locks) after accidents or calamities;

  • Participation in calamity management teams in infrastructure and water management;

  • Failure analyses and tracing of failure mechanisms, supported by third party investigations if required;

  • Consulting in matters concerning organisation of maintenance services and contracting of such services to structures;

  • Consulting and assistance in implementation of new management policies and maintenance programs to structures, devices, entire systems and other assets;

  • Environmental analyses and sustainability assessments of structures, devices, construction methods, maintenance procedures etc.

  • Education courses to students and professionals in the fields of my expertise (see following tab pages of this website);

  • Instructions and trainings to operation or maintenance personnel in design related issues;

  • Consulting and assistance in innovations and new material applications in construction, infrastructure, industry, water management, energy winning and some other branches;

  • Scientific and technological publications and contributions to the publications by others;

  • Reviewing of manuscripts, papers and other (both intended and issued) publications in the fields of my expertise;

  • Transfer of knowledge in all fields of my expertise to other persons and parties (in particular to younger generation) in any form that might be convenient to my clients.

This is a non-exhaustive list. Other forms of services or diverse combinations of these forms are also available by mutual agreement. After all, it will usually be the content rather than the form that determines the quality of my services and your satisfaction.

General conditions

If not otherwise agreed, I will deliver my services under the General Conditions voor "Engineering Services and Other Technical Design and Consultancy", code 7112, as classified by the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands. This falls under the General Condition for services. If you wish, you can download a sample of this document from the web address shown below. It is in Dutch and you need to create your account and answer some questions before downloading, but it works.

Deviations from these conditions or even their entire or partial replacement by the client's conditions are negotiable if desired.

Fees

One of the privileges of having an own business is a relative freedom in hourly rates and payment arrangements. I am going to use this freedom. My services are not inexpensive. I am, however, an idealist to some extent. Projects that are clearly beneficial for the environment will, therefore, receive a discount. The same applies to projects that offer undoubted social benefits, employ innovative or sustainable technologies, serve the countries of so-called growing economies and the like.

In general, I prefer contracting based on hourly rates. Lump sum contracts are, however, also negotiable at times when the expected results of my services can be defined beforehand with reasonable precision. Other agreements in this matter can be considered as well.
